Why the Best Work Van Is the One You Can Change Later

A work van rarely stays exactly the way it left the dealer. Give it six months and somebody’s added shelving. Then a ladder rack. Then another toolbox because the first one somehow became permanently full. Before long, the cargo area looks less like a van and more like a rolling shed. That’s why the idea of a modular electric van is more useful than it might sound at first. The Farizon SV has been designed as an electric vehicle from the ground up, with several body sizes aimed at trades, delivery work, fleets and even camper conversions.

Your business probably won’t look the same in three years

This is the bit people forget when buying commercial vehicles.

They shop for today.

That makes sense, obviously. You need to carry the tools you own now and complete the jobs sitting on the calendar this month. But businesses change surprisingly quickly.

A solo electrician hires an apprentice.

A florist starts doing weddings.

A small courier business wins a contract that suddenly means another 40 boxes every morning.

And the vehicle that felt enormous when you bought it somehow becomes packed to the roof.

It happens.

So rather than asking whether a van is big enough, it can be smarter to ask whether the vehicle can suit the way your work might change.

Start with what annoys you now

Forget the glossy photos for a moment.

Go outside and look inside your current van.

What’s the thing that irritates you every day?

Maybe you’ve got extension leads hanging from door handles because there’s nowhere sensible to put them. Perhaps your shelving is so deep that small parts disappear behind larger boxes. Or you’re crawling around on your knees trying to reach something that slid to the front during a hard brake.

Those annoyances tell you what you actually need.

The smaller SV short-wheelbase version offers 6.95 cubic metres of cargo volume and a payload capacity of 1,300 kg. Farizon also offers longer versions for businesses that need more room, not just greater weight capacity.

That difference matters.

A mobile technician carrying dense tools might favour payload. Someone transporting bulky but light products will care far more about cubic metres.

Same van category. Completely different problem.

Then somebody decides they want to stand up

This sounds trivial until you’ve spent years hunched over inside a low-roof van.

If your job involves regularly working from the cargo area, extra height is lovely.

Actually, lovely is underselling it.

Being able to stand while sorting stock or grabbing equipment at 7am instead of bending your neck sideways is the sort of thing you appreciate after about three days.

The long-wheelbase high-roof SV has 11.22 cubic metres of cargo space with a quoted payload capacity of 1,170 kg. Its higher roof also gives operators more vertical storage space. Rear barn doors can swing through 270 degrees, which can make loading larger items easier when access is tight.

Again, not glamorous.

But very useful.

A bigger van isn't automatically the better van

There’s a temptation when choosing a commercial vehicle to buy as much space as the budget allows.

Why not?

Because then you have to drive it.

If most of your jobs involve suburban streets, tight workshops and underground car parks, dragging around unused cargo space every day can become annoying pretty quickly.

Farizon’s SV range includes several wheelbase and roof combinations. The short-wheelbase model uses a 3,100 mm wheelbase. The long-wheelbase versions extend that to 3,600 mm. There’s also a super-long-wheelbase high-roof configuration with a 3,850 mm wheelbase and 13 cubic metres of cargo volume.

That gives buyers a fairly simple decision to make.

How much van do you genuinely need?

Not how much would be nice once a year.

How much will you use on Wednesday afternoon when you’re trying to reverse between two parked utes?

That’s the number worth thinking about.

Fit-outs are where modular thinking gets interesting

A bare cargo area is really just the starting point.

Different businesses can take the same basic van and turn it into completely different working spaces.

An electrician might want narrow shelves with labelled bins running down both sides.

A mobile repair business could favour a workbench, tool drawers and room for diagnostic gear.

A courier operator probably wants open floor space and quick access above almost everything else.

Then there are camper conversions.

Farizon specifically lists camper builds among the uses for its larger SV configurations. The biggest version offers 13 cubic metres of cargo volume and is intended to accommodate larger interior fit-outs.

And that highlights the point nicely.

Flexibility isn’t about having lots of clever folding pieces built into the van. It’s about starting with a platform that leaves enough room to build what you actually need.

Battery size needs the same kind of thinking

You can overbuy range too.

Most of the SV configurations use an 83 kWh battery. Depending on body size, quoted WLTP range runs from 319 km to 376 km for those versions. The larger super-long-wheelbase model uses a 106 kWh battery with a quoted WLTP range of up to 398 km.

Those are laboratory figures, not promises about what you’ll see every morning.

Payload, weather, temperature, terrain and driving style can all change real-world range. Farizon says as much in its own range information.

So check your mileage records.

If your van normally travels 100 km per day, there’s little point obsessing over whether one configuration travels another 30 km on a test cycle.

If you regularly head out of town, that extra margin might suddenly matter a lot.

Context changes everything.

Buy the empty space with a plan

Probably the most sensible thing you can do before ordering any work van is sketch the inside.

Literally.

Take the cargo dimensions and draw where everything would go. Shelving on the left. Long tools above. Heavy gear low down. Leave yourself enough room to walk through without banging your shin on something sharp every morning.

Then think a year ahead.

Will you add staff? Different equipment? Bigger jobs?

Nobody can predict everything.

But a commercial vehicle is usually going to hang around for a while, so buying one that can adapt to a changing workload makes far more sense than filling every centimetre on day one.

The best work van isn’t necessarily the biggest one.

It’s the one that still works when your business changes its mind.
